Except he wasn’t too cool to step forward and put his arms around her waist and kiss her. As soon as their lips made contact, he forgot about Mum and Dad being in the room, about Lolly’s father being one of the most powerful and dangerous men on the planet, and he just lost himself. His arms tightened around her and the one rational brain cell that he still possessed, which wasn’t fizzing with excitement, just managed to stop his hands moving down to her bottom.

When he finally managed to pull himself away, he was breathless. Lolly’s eyes were shining and teary.

“Wow,” he said, and Lolly laughed.

  Sir Michael coughed loudly.

“Yes, well, l think we’ll be going before I see something I really don’t want to,” he remarked, drily.

And then they left. Sir Michael opened the front door, and James was surprised to see a black Mercedes pull up on the kerb outside the house.

“Our ride,” explained Sir Michael, “courtesy of the Security Service.”

James marvelled at Sir Michael’s audacity. He was going to use MI5 to help him escape, or whatever it was that he was intending to do.

Sir Michael opened the nearside rear door for Lolly. She slipped gracefully into the seat. Sir Michael rounded the car and got in from the other side.

James ran up to the window.

“Don’t forget me, or Sam,” he said, knowing how uncool that sounded.

“I won’t,” said Lolly, lowering the window. She cast a furtive glance at her father, then leaned through the gap and kissed James full on the mouth. It was a snatched moment. The rush of blood to his head made James unsteady on his feet.

When he opened his eyes, Lolly was looking longingly at him as her head withdrew back into the car. Her lips were parted, her eyes wet but determined. A strand of hair fell across her nose. James had never seen anyone so beautiful. She gave meaning to his existence.

She looked him squarely in the eyes.

  “I’m coming back,” she said.
